Trivia
- No other Pokémon has the sametypecombination asAlolanNinetales.
- Alolan Ninetales is as well the onlyWater ice-type Pokémon immune toDragon-type moves.
- Ninetales's name is misspelled asNinetails in thePokémon Trading Bill of fare Game for theGame Boy Color and in someprerelease material.
- Ninetales and Vulpix share theircategory name with the Fennekin evolutionary line, Nickit, and Thievul. They are all known equally the Play a trick on Pokémon.
Origin
Ninetales may be based on aruby fox and the 狐 kitsune ofJapanese fable, which are said to have many tails, extremely long lifespans, and supernatural powers such equally the ability to breath fire. After reaching an avant-garde age, kitsune take onspirit forms, which may explicate why Ninetales can learn variousGhost-type andPsychic-type moves. Specifically, it may be based on thekyūbi no kitsune, whose fur turns white-gold after it has lived for 1,000 years and gains its 9th tail.
Alolan Ninetales may be based on anArctic fox, which grows a white coat of fur in the winter tocamouflage in the snowfall. Its mount habitat and lore. It could too be inspired pasttulikettu, a mythical play a joke on creature of Finnish lore whose radiant fur is said to be responsible for the limerick of thenorthern lights. The Finnish discussion for aurora, revontulet, too literally translates to "play tricks fires" which could be intentional as Ninetales' original form is Fire Type.
Name origin
Ninetales may be a combination ofnine andtales, which itself may combinetails and fairy tales (alluding to it beingness based on a mythical creature). It may also reference thecat o' nine tails whip (due to its tendency to punish anyone who grabs its tails).
Kyukon may be a combination of 九kyū (9) and 恨kon (grudge; from the expletive it may cast on its foes), こんこんkon kon (the sound foxes make), コンロkonro (gas stove; relating to itsFire type), or 狐ko (an alternate reading ofkitsune; Japanese forfox). Alternatively, it tin can be read as 旧恨kyūkon (onetime grudge).
